You most definitely can't hear the specific positioning of most of the musicians from front row center. The only specificity you get in aural imaging from front row center would be from soloists near the front and center.
This is not my experience at all! Not, I expect, that of the engineers who made many of the best stereo LPs.
Maybe it helps that I have made recordings- I like to place the mics at the spot where I get the same perspective that I hear.
