who is blessed with the BEST listening spot in the entire room, for more than just one reason.
i was entering the auditorium at Van Nuys High School where Robert Eisenhart was warming up the string orchestra. oh, the TEXTURE of those strings, that is until i SAT DOWN. it all went away when my ears were at the level of the feet of the orchestra members.
the conductor NEEDS this localization that is sometimes duplicated on recordings to know which musician to admonish for his "clam". notice also that the recording mics are placed, many times, above the conductor's head. no WONDER they pick up the location of each sound.
the blurry amalgam heard by most of the audience is still wonderful as long as it doesn't first travel through the sound reinforcement system.
too bad that in small venues like the old Jazz Bakery in LA, sound reinforcement was used. oh maybe there are technical reasons that could be cited but REALLY, i would like to hear the instruments and vocalists themselves.
personally, i would prefer speakers that deliver the clear, concise imaging and tonal accuracy of the real thing. in the case of Kraftwerk, amplified will HAVE to do.
