RE: JA: "I cannot deal with late copy."

Hi Tom, I haven't responded directly to any of your postings on the Audio
Asylum because I fully respect your right to express whatever opinions
you feel appropriate. But in this instance, you touch on something you
have mentioned several times on this forum and that offended you deeply,
which was my lack of flexibility when it came to the copy date for the
January 2015 issue of Stereophile.

I have always worked with Stereophile's writing team on this subject,
even accepting copy 3 weeks behind the nominal final date. With a monthly
publishing schedule, this is about as flexible as it is possible to be.

But in the case of the January issue, you are correct in that I could not
be as flexible as you or other writers would have liked. In our email
exchange on October 6, where you asked what the final deadline could be,
I responded that I had very little flexibility on this specific issue.
This was not intended to be humiliating or insulting but was the literal
truth. Due to the needs of the printer and circulation department, the
production schedule for the January issue was less than than the usual 4
weeks. In addition, I was due to spend most of the first week of that
schedule at the RMAF, where it would be impossible for me to do any
magazine work, and I had been called for jury duty at the end of the
schedule. And just to compound the pressure I was under for this issue's
production, I was taking the last weekend in October off - my first days
off since Stephen Mejias left in March 2014 - to attend the Formula 1
Grand Prix in Austin, TX.

With our small fulltime staff - other than music editor Robert Baird and
art director Jeremy Moyler, there is just me - it was going to be very
difficult to get this particular issue out of the door on schedule. When
I am not in the office, production on everything other than the website,
the music features, and the record reviews freezes, hence my telling you
that I might well not be able to offer you the usual flexibility when it
came to the late submission of copy for the January issue.

My apologies for the stress and anger this caused you. But with the
January issue I was between a rock and a hard place. :-(

John Atkinson
Technical Editor, Stereophile
