The funny or unexpected thing I think is that with music (which is harmonically structured) it takes a pretty high level of 2nd to be detectable as in comparing with and without but it takes much more before it sounds worse than “without”.
If I remember right it was the Beatles white album was the first one where even order distortion was added via mis biased electronics for “warmth”.
Perhaps weirder is that when you add significant even or odd order distortion to natural sounds (generally not harmonic), both are equally detectable.
