Failing to use the latest "politically correct" vocabulary to describe categories of people has little or nothing to do with being mean to specific individuals, although the mentally challenged may be incapable of making this distinction.
My wife was disabled, being legally blind since a child. I am well aware of how people often treated her as stupid for what was a purely physical handicap. After decades of experience, we got to the point where we accepted this, trying to feel sorry for these people because of their narcissistic personality and their poor upbringing.
