Yes, but as long as they are intimately interconnected, as they are in the vast majority of normal people, why is that relevant?

That is not a direct consequence nor is it universally accepted.

"Independent psychologists (not bought and paid for by manufacturers) should be the people conducting these audio tests - not engineers with no grasp or expertise on perception/brain/audio/test stress factors. "

I agree with you here but, unfortunately, those with the skills to do this lack both the motivation and the financial support to do it.
