It's a great point. We can nitpick individual words, but shouldn't we lighten up?
Stereophile gets SO much criticism here. Let's have some perspective: The magazine has a hell of a lot of content per month. It's about the best we have on the subject. It comes out regularly. And it's dirt cheap!
Compare some other magazines on your newsstand. My wife buys this thing (about tea and cozies?) -- the magazine is like 9 bucks, is mostly ads and pretty pictures. No spectrum analyzers were hurt in the making of that magazine.
Audio reviewing is a difficult task. The only reason people put such effort into it is because we love our music and our gear. Most critics put in a huge effort for free. We're passionate about the subject material, so we want things done to perfection. Even the most diligent, reasonable reviews are not going to please everyone.
