RE: Alas review Standard is falling

With DACs in particular it's a fast paced world. Performance has gone through the roof in recent years. You can get a sub-$500 DAC with performance that just boggles the mind making contemplating very expensive alternatives more than a little daunting.

As for evaluating the alternatives, and importantly placing then along a continuum of price/performance/sonic category/etc., you really need to turn to those that have a particular interest in keeping up on developments, and with wide exposure to current offerings. That implies keeping abreast of world wide offerings, and without prejudice to the various distribution mechanism.

I would recommend the writing/opinions of John Grandberg (inner|fidelity, who also writes member reviews as "project86" at Head-Fi), Michael Lavorgna (AudioStream), and John Darko (Digital Audio Review - also writes for 6moons and other publications).

Those lacking a particular interest in this field will almost certainly suffer from a deficit in the big picture and are likely to produce routine boilerplate offerings of questionable value ... or worst practically pee all over themselves upon first exposure to a sub-$500 over performer.
