How Does One Become an Audio Critic/Scribe?

Hi all,

I was just wondering how one becomes an audio scribe? Although a music fan, the budget component writer at 'Stereophile' does not seem to have much knowledge of or background with audio equipment. I don't believe he has ever mentioned what audio gear he owned prior to writing for 'Stereophile.' He also does not come across as very passionate about his hobby. The other writers at 'Stereophile' seem to have a vast amount of experience. They also seem to be quite obssessive about their gear (well, Mr. Tellig doesn't, really).

Anyway, I am curious how one "gets into" the audio writing business? Would a journalism background and experience publishing articles for major newspapers help?
