RE: Strange review context Bob Deutsch review.....

Thanks for the comment. I'm not unaware of this issue, and for the review of the Conrad-Johnson LPM125 amplifier I actually borrowed a speaker that does not have a powered subwoofer, just to provide a "normal" reference. My conclusions about the bass performance on the amplifier did not differ depending on the speaker; it seems that the subwoofer amplifier was essentially transparent to the sound of the main amplifier. In my review of the GoldenEar Triton Two, I noted that "even though the Triton Two subwoofer has its own amplifier, it sounded different depending on the main amplifier being used, the Simaudio producing the tightest, most extended bass."

The logistics of the PrimaLuna review were such that I was not able to have a familiar non-amplified speaker as a reference. However, I *did* test the amp with three speakers--albeit all with powered subwoofers--and the contribution of the PrimaLuna to the character of the bass was the same with all three speakers, so I would be surprised if it was different with a speaker that does not have a powered subwoofer. I still have the PrimaLuna on hand, and I'm about to receive a pair of speakers without amplified subwoofers for review, so I will do a follow-up.

Bob
