The obvious antidote to temptations or suspicions of advertiser influence on reviewer "objectivity" would be rigorous program of double-blind testing, utilizing the highly trained and experienced ears of high-end reviewers. This would take sonic evaluation away from the realm of religion and into the realm of objectivity, which really is needed at the prices being charged by some boutique firms. Double-blind testing by expert reviewers will no doubt show that some products fully warrant expected prices and some do not. This one editorial policy would do audiophiles a greater service than any other policy reform. Double-blind testing is a well understood protocol that stands up to the highest standards of objectivity. I am not proposing that such testing use "laymen" but rather small panels of the most experienced, knowledgeable, and respected reviewers. Yes, it would create clear winners and losers, and a number of "ties" that would then be mediated by (guess what?) price. It would transform the industry and expand the market for the best components, which many agnostics doubt merit their prices due to a complete lack of double-blind testing as the foundation for published reviews.
