We started out talking about prototypes. In other words, speakers that are not commercially available. That, at least, is what JV wrote. The problem is that the story changes when he gets into a dialog defending his inclusion of them in the GE section. Now we find out that they are not really available, but, well, maybe they are if you pay a hefty price. Are they out in the field? Well, not according to JV.
That they are available for a price does not make them a commercial speaker. That makes them a pet project. JVs disclosure that they were in his possession raises the question, legitimately, I think, of why does a reviewer have a prototype speaker in his possession. A speaker that is not available, and that is a work in progress. Then, when the going got tough, those same speakers became suddenly became available to anyone, for a price. Essentially, he lost the argument, then he, or they, changed the facts in an attempt to avoid an appearance of an impropriety.
When a reviewer, or anyone, changes the facts to suit his argument, sorry, I cry foul. I find the evolution of the story as questionable as a reviewer simply having a prototype. I would also find objectionable a car manufacturer providing a pre-production model to a reviewer to be likewise questionable. That the latter happens does not make the former right. And likewise, because lemmings, or the apathetic, tolerate integrity lapses in the national media should not cause us to lower our standards and expectations relative to audio journalism. Right is right, regardless of the subject matter. I submit that if we as consumers were more vigilant, these things would not happen. I'd prefer that the answer is not that audio journalism has room to catch up to the national media, but rather that the national media has room to catch up to audio journalism.
There are certainly no "rules." Just as there are no "rules" that I do not cheat on my wife, I do not because it is the right thing do. That is what defines integrity. Which JV apparently, to some degree, lacks. Now, let's make our opinions knows and try to make the world a better place.
