I think your questions are a direct hit. The problem that I have seen here in the last few months relative to appearances of impropriety is that some feel the impropriety itself is insignificant if the damages (perceived or otherwise) are small. Sort of like thinking "Hey, sure they stole from me, but it was only a dollar. Big deal." The problem I think they fail to appreciate is that the dollar becomes more if you do not, to quote Barney Fife (not Pfife), 'nip it in the bud. Nip it.'

If you are keeping score: (1) JV has an issue with cables entrusted to him showing up on Audiogon (2) JV makes disparaging comments in a show report relative to Ayre, which are later, as I recall, proven to be specious, at best, based upon the exhibitor's comments relative to when JV was in the room and when the Ayre components were hooked up (3) JV makes disparaging comments in a show report regarding the Caliburn turntable, commenting that he has never heard, at a show, a system sound good with the Calibrun as its source (comments which were coincidentally made around the time there was an issue with HP getting a Calibrun in his room)
(4) JV listens to a prototype of a speaker, which he then (implicitly) recommends, arguing that everyone should trust him that there is no monkey business.

Those dollars pile up the more certain conduct is tolerated.
