As to awards and prototypes: I would agree that awards ought to be reserved for designs that have reached real production and are available to consumers, even if the supply is very limited (e.g., some exceptional MC cartridges, tonearms and turntables). Promising prototypes are tempting, and I wouldn't mind giving them a mention just to make our readers aware of new prospects on the horizon (assuming substantial merit), but giving an audio prototype an award would be similar to giving a concept car the *Motor Trend* "Car of the Year."
Why introduce cognitive dissonance concerning the meaning and value of your award? It's too hard to establish the credibility of an award...we waited nearly 14 years to launch PFO's Brutus Award, and have worked diligently to make it significant. Why undermine it with ill-considered application?
Or so it seems to me.
All the best,
david
