But I don't disagree with your points, taking them as hypothetical.
We all need air, water, food, and a dry warm place to sleep. Somewhere below those items, most of us need (to a greater or lesser extent) affirmation, approval, validation, whatever you want to call it. When Peter Mitchell commented that he wished he'd written the liner notes I'd written for one record, I got a real buzz. When people write in to Stereophile saying that they bought something because I endorsed it and they love it, the same. When people like Peter McGrath take me seriously as a recordist, it makes my day.
The fly in the ointment is human nature: it is flawed, has no history, and is not perfectible in this life. That's why society has rules and customs, such as married people wearing wedding rings.
I am as fallible as anyone else. I love having my impressions, opinions, and judgments validated. Even in seemingly-trivial matters such as my "Personal Favorite" system at FSI Montreal 2008 (Leben-ProAc-Audio Aero) knocking the socks off both JA and RD. Vas-y, moi!!! Woo-hoo!
So, just like wearing a wedding ring, having bright-line rules that keep my natural enthusiasm and exuberance from spilling over into unpaid consultation protects everybody. And yes, you are 100% right: "Don't change a thing" is consultation too.
Here's to this matter dying a natural and speedy death, so we can all get back to talking about real-world products with at least five dealers that have had the same importer for five years and deliver exceptional value for money!
And great new recordings to play on them!
