John, I can see why JV wanted the speakers in his home. He is, I assume, a hobbyist at heart in the enviable position of playing with expensive shiny toys. On the other hand, why would a manufacturer send the only unit in their stock to a reviewer? Not for a review, because, according to JV, he has made it clear that there will be no formal review until the speaker actually hits the streets. No to sell product, because there will be no review, and, apparently, there is no product to sell, at this point in time.

I can think of only two reasons. One, the manufacturer does not have the capital to actually build the speaker, but rather is hoping that a kind blurb from JV will lead to people plunking down their cash, which the manufacturer can then take to actually build the speaker. I've represented some general contractors that have done the same thing, and it never turns out good.

The second reason would be that the manufacturer wants feedback on the product before the manufacturer releases it. If that does not place the reviewer in the position of being a consultant, I'm not sure what does. I've read the entire post over on the AV forum, and JVs position seems to be (my langauge) that because he is a technical boob, and can provide no real advice to the manufacturer, then he is not consulting. What I think JV does not realize is that even if he tells the manufacturer that this is a great product, do not change a thing, then he has acted as a consultant. Sometimes I tell clients that they have done everything they can do. Well, they still have consulted with me.

I'll be interested to see, when this speaker finds the light of day, which may be never based on the years that the product apparently has been germinating, if JV conducts the review. My little experience from the outside looking in at TAS tells me that JV does not care much about appearances of impropriety, and TAS is willing to pretty much let him do what he wants, or at least tolerate. But then, based upon your posts here, I gather you are not too surprised.
