Hi JNS,
First, I appreciate the civil tone of your post. As I proceed to disagree, I hope you read the same tone into my message.
As for JM being quick to insult and being on a mission to destroy any criticism, I can’t agree with that at all. JM puts more thought, more civility and more effort into the majority of his posts than the great majority of posters here. A quick one-line answer is a great rarity for him and, as far as I’ve seen, when someone makes a real point rather than a baseless and nebulous accusation, he’ll go on for paragraphs with his response. As I say, that’s more effort than most that I see around here and it’s much greater effort than hikejohn seemed to put into his original post.
As for why JM was so quick to insult in this case, I can't speak for him but it seems to be that it was because hikejohn’s post looked like the work of a troll, plain and simple. As Robert Young says below, all hikejohn needs to do is pretend that someone else wrote it and read it again. I recall the moderator saying something like, “When it looks like a troll and smells like a troll…” I don’t think he’s in on JM’s conspiracy to stifle criticisms in this forum.
Had hikejohn been specific in his post rather than a broad swipe at reviewers in general and had he mentioned any specific example in his original post, I’m fairly certain that JM’s response would have been much more measured. As it is, once hikejohn was asked for examples he cites one about a product almost as old as I am and the other of a Wilson speaker that he doesn’t say he’s ever heard for himself. You may agree with his premise, but the reasonably prudent person would agree that it looked like a baseless accusation meant to smear reviewers in general. He says that this was not his intention, but that doesn’t change how most everybody else took it.
As for defending JV; that’s a very different thing. The accusations against JV are very specific and there seems to be a ton of evidence to back those accusations up. That certainly wasn’t the case with hikejohn’s original post.
