First let me say that if you think that JM dissects comments as they relate to reviewers and Stereophile objectively and accurately I think that you are dead wrong. He seems to be on a mission to destroy any criticism of this entity and these people at every turn. What is worse is that he draws a distinct line between the inherent worth of a comment made by someone that he disagrees with and a person that he thinks has integrity or is a friend. Further, JM is very quick to insult by calling inmates trolls, idiots, scummy, etc.
I maintain that JM has taken great liberties with his interpretation of Hikejohn's original post. You be the judge.
The moderator of this forum killed this original thread because of "name calling". This name calling began with JM and continued in his subsequent responses. Hikejohn from beginning to end avoided this childish behaviour. I got sucked in and called JM an ass. Hikejohn immediately was put on the defensive and showed great restraint in the defense of himself as a person (not on his views). JM and the typical other players on this forum always attack a person personally. This is not appropriate behaviour and it is a severe modification of this forum's posting guidelines.
It almost seems that many on this forum think that no one has the right to question the actions of certain individuals that have made what they feel to be contributions above and beyond. How dare Hikejohn question the motivations behind a publication or the design decisions of an icon like Mr. Wilson. Did JM think for one moment that perhaps Hikejohn interprets measurement differently than he or others? Did JM think for one second that Hikejohn thinks that the 7 sounds better than the 8? Hikejohn said in his original post that this "confuses him"..hardly the comment made by a inmate with a hidden agenda. From the look of the measurements I would say that the 8 is not a significant departure in terms or performance from the 7. How much more does the 8 cost? All apropriate questions in my mind. No where in Hikejohn's posts did I see an insult to Mr. Wilson.
I think that it is perfectly acceptable to call into question the motivations behind the reviewing process and the effect that financial and personal relationships with advertisers and manufacturers have on the printed word. Does this mean that it DOES have an impact..no. Does this mean that it COULD have an impact...absolutely. Am I saying that a bad product will get a great review..no. Am I saying that the review can be sweetened or certain verbage can be changed....quite possibly. Audio publications are businesses and to hold them to any different standard is a serious mistake. What is most disturbing regarding the defense of Stereophile is the relationship between the defenders and this publication.
Regarding the dogpile on JV and The Absolute Sound.....I dont see the normal apologists defending JV. I dont know all of the details of the offence, but I will say that at The Shows JV seems to appear in more rooms and to frequent the lesser knowns than any Stereophile writer. In fact, peers in this industry tell me they rarely see the Stereophile crew in their rooms, but often see writers from the e-zines and The Absolute Sound.
This forum has been rendered impotent by the usual suspects.
