You see given SF's practice of trumpeting its review policy, in articles, in reviews, and often in posts here, the answer to the question is readily available. In fact the very question was addressed in the article that JA chastised jdza for not reading, or at least not reading carefully. From the article:
It is the editor's decision whether a product distributed by mail-order or via the Web qualifies for review. However, at minimum the company must have a formal US presence and must offer a 30-day, money-back refund policy. (Many companies charge a restocking fee for returned products; I believe this is a legitimate practice.) [again, as in my post below, we can assume that this covers "direct" sales.]
And as to the question of what leeway their columnists enjoy (again from the same article):
It is not Stereophile's role to help brands without US distribution become established in the US. For formal equipment reports (as opposed to news-item or regular column reporting), products that are distributed through conventional retail channels must be available at five or more US retail outlets (footnote 3).
Thus it seems clear that for "formal equipment reports", i.e. full reviews, the columnists would appear to have no more leeway than regular reviewers since "formal equiment reports" don't appear in the regular columns.The only question then is did the Caliburn review appear in a column, or did it appear in the review section. If the former then we would be forced to conclude non-adherence to the SF's published review policy, if the latter then I'd have to say it appears odd that a mention in "column reporting" lead to awarding the product 2006 Analog Product of the Year!
Anyway as to the question of where it appeared in the publication I believe you should be qualified to provide the answer... thanks in advance.
