You write: "Is it wrong to award a Golden Ear to a prototype from an established company? Especially as that company is likely to use that award as a platform to launch such a product."

"WRONG" is in the eye of the beholder. There are no hard and fast laws regarding how TAS is supposed to dole out awards. But it has caused no small stir. The assumption regarding these awards may have been unreasonable - that they are given to *commercially available* products that are extraordinarily meritorious. Perhaps TAS should clearly define what the prerequisite for a Golden Ear award is.

You write: "Is it wrong to give a full review to new company who has sold 3 specimens of their first and brand new product? Especially as that company is likely to use that award as a platform to launch such a product in Asia."

Again, "wrong" is in the eye of the beholder. BUT, there is an important difference that you are glossing over. The new company who sold 3 specimens had already gone through the expense and risk of prototyping, had already gone through the trouble of making something produceable commercially, and the product in question was real. 3 units or 30 units, the fact remains that it was a product, not a prototype. There is an order of magnitude in difference, something you would readily understand if you have ever been charged with moving a product from prototype to production.

You write: "Or is the problem that Jonathan Valin has simply lost all credibility and any action by him must be considered suspect?"

This question can't be answered in these forums, but rather can only play out in the general sphere of the magazine's subscriber base. My guess is that, despite what has transpired with JV in the recent past, the magazine is mounting behind Jonathan and is pushing forward with confidence. Whether or not this has caused you or anyone else here to question JV's credibility is immaterial at this point ... they're either selling magazines or they aren't.

You write:"Or is the problem that it is TAS bashing month? After all, the regular trio of dustbinbashers (Marks,Kuller&Hansen) arrived pretty quickly at the site of the riot."

This IS the section of AA where reviewers and the publications they write for can be called to task for their work. Stereophile always seems to catch the most grief in here, so for TAS to catch a little hell every now and then isn't a travesty. It might be that, without a little bloodletting, some reviewers might believe their own hype.

I like that this forum is here and that it's purpose is to openly discuss matters such as this one. Print magazines otherwise have a very inefficient way of finding out if they are meeting the needs and expectations of their readers. That we can have this discussion as a community should be helpful to readers, manufacturers, retailers, distributors, and ultimately the magazines themselves.
