Everyone knows that a long-term home audition is the best way--heck, the only reasonable way--to select an audio component. But if you're not a dealer (or maybe a reviewer), or friends with several, such opportunities are extremely rare unless you live in a major city and have a network of dealers as buds (or buy from the Internet, where most products give you at least 15 days to listen at home). So what's the alternative? Half an hour in a listening room, possibly with bad acoustics, with a salesman and unfamiliar components? I don't think so.
All the alternatives suck. Buying a high-value component that has been around for a long time is as good as any.
