While it could have been a writer for Stereophile looking for a free product, it seems to me there's another possibility -- that the person who called Allied was only pretending to be a writer, hoping to get a freebie by ruse. I'm not saying this is the case, just noting that your description seems to allow this possibility.

I imagine smart manufacturers would be on to this kind of thing, and would be likely to check with the magazine's editor if the caller was unknown to them. And that the good editors would appreciate that, as a kind of mutual assurance that no funny games are being played.
