Since I was one of the people that made this affair public, Valin apparently has a grudge against Ayre. So in his recent CES report he made it sound like the Ayre electronics were responsible for bad sound in the TAD room. He loved the sound of the master tapes and didn't care for the sound of his CDs, blaming it on the "arid Ayre electronics".
The only problem is that the only Ayre equipment in the system was the power amps, which were obviously the same for the master tape and the CDs. On the other hand, the CD source consisted of a Bel Canto transport feeding a Berkeley Audio Designs DAC. (There was no preamp in the system.) So his conclusion was not only ridiculous but slanderous:

What's perhaps even worse is that Valin's behavior is condoned by both the editor-in-chief and the publisher. Which is why TAS doesn't make my list for commendable journalistic standards.
