Similar things have happened to manufacturers who I represented. I had a customer, a dentist, mind you, call up a wire company I represented, bad mouthing me, saying that he and I couldn't get along and then asked if he could buy factory direct and at a discount. Mind you, I had offered him a nice discount already. Sheesh, the things people do and think they can get away with! He comes in a week later acting totally nonchalant and purchases some wire at the discounted price I had offered after the factory turned him down.
I got tims of similar stories, too... This wasn't an isolated case.
