And I caught a certain amount of crap for it.

And as far as what I wanted on the submitted lists, I thought I was adequately clear in the original article: Which recordings or works say "American Musical Life" the way RVW's "Tallis Fantasia" and "Oxford Elegy" say "British Musical Life."

NOT "Sumer is acumen in." Music people listen to.

Repartee is what you think of on the way home, and I probably could fine-tune that a bit now by saying if you omnisciently went coast to coast in 24 hours, and could evesdrop on iPods and elementary schools and ballroom dancing and civic chorales and cover bands and marching bands, what songs would America be singing and playing?

I may revisit this in December's issue... .
