I totally agree with you and that's why I don't hesitate anymore to buy old mono recordings - it's a lot easier to get lost in the music without all the distractions of a spectacular presentation. An other way to get ride of that nasty habit is probably to buy rigth the first time, as recommended by John Marks. Constant upgrading is a sure way to audio hell.

As for listening to the performance instead of the music, I think it's a major problem but rarely mention since it's the other side of collecting gear - i.e. collecting software. It's sad but consumerism is ruining almost every genuine human experience. Sorry if I sound too melodramatic.
