I have an old Planar 3 (20 years in my possession and going strong) with a Grace 707 tonearm, this being a TT from before when the Rega arms were made. It goes into a Creek 4240 phono stage, a FP and then an ST-70. I just noticed tonight that the stylus on my current AT cartridge is bent. It is after all almost 15 years old at this point so I guess it is time. For a while I'd replace my cartridge once or twice a year, but I stopped when CD took over. I've had Grado, Grace, AT, Shure, and maybe a few others over the years. Always MM, never MC. I never had a step up transformer.Any suggestions? I looked into the cartridge that Doc recommended a while ago (Welco?), but they are no longer listed on the website, so somebody bought them all up. I'm not looking to spend a huge amount of money, something under $200, and less if possible. I'd rather spend the money on the Seduction. Maybe there are some other true bargains out there, like the Foreplay is.
I don't use my turntable that much. My records were all ruined in a flooded basement a few years back. They are playable, but they're just not the same. If I had a new cartridge, maybe I'd go shopping for some new ones at garage sales etc... I've been seeing new vinyl at Virgin records that I'd be interested in too.
I asked this question on the vinyl forum a while back and got a few snooty answers. I know this forum is a lot more friendly.
