Thanks, New England Bots!

Yesterday 8 or 10 New England Bots got together at Triode & Co for what turned out to be an 8 hour session of incredible listening. I'll do the briefest of rundowns, and hope that they guys post their impressions and fill in the inevitable errors and gaps.

Starting with the single most visually and sonically impressive item, JLaPaire did indeed bring his Pi Theatre 4's, and they were something to see and hear. You can go a verrrrry long way on 3 to 8 watts with 101db/w/m speaks! Sticking with speakers briefly, Garland brought a pair of Pi Studio 2's he has built for a friend, and they perform out of bounds for the cost of the kit. (I'll let someone else explain the secret ingredient that was added to the system in mid-listen, if anyone recalls.)

Steve Culton did indeed bring one of his Straight 8 cabs and gave us the "inside" story on this project. He promises to bring the pair back "alive" for our next meeting.

Mike P. brought his PE turntable, which was sounding musical and pacey as always, as well as his Soul Sister in PAS-clothing. The guts had nothing in common with the "disguise". Sounded very detailed and extremely quick to me.

Shane, who last time brought a 45 amp, had since (?) built a stereo 2A3 amp that only required a small forklift to bring in. Sounded wonderful. Shane, please explain what-all you had going on there. Regrettably, my head was toast by the end of the day, with even less recall than usual.

Bill brought a pair of monoblok VV32B amps with mercury vapor rectifiers. Those amps, in tandem with the Pi Theater 4s sounded like a d**n live concert!

A double threat, Garland also brought his ever-changing Paramours, which now sport 4uf oilers on outriggers in the parafeed cap position, and Mikey's TFA 2004Jr cobalt-striped OPTs. They sounded very good, but the tale will continue to unfold, as the chokes are still stockers.

Reg had read about the meet at the last minute, and hauled his Moondogs up from New Haven. We heard Sovtek, KR and Meshplate 2A3's on board, and swapped out the Sovtek 6SN7's for Sylvanias. The amps sounded very good. They sounded very fine, indeed, and I think the output tube swapping was an eye-opener. IMHO, the TJ Meshplate 2.5V 300Bs sounded awesome.

At the last minute, I fixed the ground junction on one of my Wannaglows, (which had busted loose because I hadn't included strain relief on the upgraded power cortd - DUH!)

We also did a little CD/SACD/vinyl comparing using Jacintha's Lush Life and CD/SACD usingStevie Ray Vaughn's Texas Flood.

Okay, so it wasn't all that brief. But it took 8 hours to hear it all! Guys, don't let me be the lone ranger on this. Please add your impressions.

And thanks for coming. It was a great afternoon.
Keep your ears and your mind open.
