It's so easy .... to make a trammel!!!

A trammel is a jig (template) for making circles with your router. Remove the base from a router like the inexpensive Porter-Cable 690.
Cut an 18" X 6" piece of 1/2" birch plywood. Create an ellipse at both ends for aesthetics.(or not) Mark the router attachment screw postions on the wood at one end and drill out a hole in the center large enough to admit the bit (3/4" double flute mortise bit is good).
Attach the trammel to the router.
Now locate the center of the circle and drill a small hole. Put a broken drill bit or piece of spring steel rod in the hole. Carefully measure the distance from the hole to the OUTSIDE (furthest) cutting edge of the bit. Mark that distance on the trammel and drill a small hole.
Push the rod through the hole in the trammel, position the router, hit the switch and make a perfect, round hole, every time, any size.
Oh yeah, let the trammel be big enough that it runs well past the router base on to the workpiece so it doesn't fall through with the waste and ruin your whole day.
Or you can wimp out and buy a trammel at fine stores everywhere.
