I talked to Doc about this too. There is a misprint in the manual. The very last item at the bottom of page 39 should read "Solder the resistor lead to" (it continues on the next page) "the cupped end of the RCA jack's center post."The reference to the 3' piece of 20 ga. magnet wire should be ignored. Instead you should (on page 40) "Cut a three inch piece of yellow offcut wire and strip both ends." and go on from there.
I also have a bit of hum but you can only hear it when you get close to the speaker.
