New switches needed for FPIII

Both the volume and the selector switches on my FPIII are functioning poorly so I feel its about time to replace them. For the volume I'm going for a stereo 21 position switch using surface mounted resistors. Obviously for the selector I need a 4 pole, 3 position switch - but do I get a shorting or non-shorting & is this the same as "make before break" and "break before make"
