The implied question is why an AC signal...

DC motor speed is controlled by varying the magnitude of the DC coming in to it. 6V vs 12V will almost double the speed, there are some losses.

An AC motor speed is controlled by the frequency of the alternating current that is fed to it. It also has losses, so a 60Hz motor will need above 60Hz to turn "synchronous" speed. The speed on the nameplate.
