Another alternative is to modify an existing turntable. Idler wheel tables have a reputation for having the most solid bass of any table. You don't have to spend the kind of money that a Garrard 301 commands today. Lencos are a favorite subject for these kinds of projects (I keep meaning to do one myself but it just keeps getting put on the back burner). Check out Lenco Heaven for a taste of what can be done.
