I built my Foreplay III a couple of years ago. Its stock without the upgrade and has been working faithfully since I first fired it up. Generally, I use it with a pair of Paramour I w/iron upgrade however I have connected it to an old Adcom solid state amp every now and then as well as bringing it to a number of local audio meetings. There has never been an issue and it still sounds great with the Paramours.
I recently completed an amp based on the diyTube ST35, which is based upon the Dynaco ST35. I say based on because the power supply uses a custom Electraprint power transformer, large hammond choke, 5AR4 tube rectifier and Sprague/ASC Oil caps for filtration. The circuit has been redesigned by a reputable amp builder/designer to use 12AV7 tubes in the driver stage as well as a number of other sonic improvements. The output transformers were built by Magnequest with M3 laminations, teflon wire and brass bells. Should be a great amp.
So, here's the issue. I use an old Adcom pre-amp to test amp on my bench. Works great, everything checks out. I bring the amp out to the main listening area, hook it up to the Foreplay and it blows a fuse. I bring it back to the bench, change the fuse, check things over again, hook it up to the Adcom... works fine. Back to the living room, hook it up to the Foreplay... blows fuse. Change fuse, try again with Foreplay... blows fuse. Drag Adcom to living room, hook it up... sounds great. Hook it up to Foreplay... blows fuse.
How can the Foreplay cause my amp to blow fuses? I don't think its just coincidence. Anything I should check?
