Ron,
Black, white, and green are the US standard colors for electrical wiring. Black is "hot" and should be associated with the fused "leg". White is "neutral" and should be associated with the unfused "leg". Green is the safety ground and should be connected directly to the chassis plate. Please review your manual.
For the wood bases, visit your local Lowes, etc. Select a MinWax stain color you like. Buy a small package of stain and several grades of sandpaper. You sand the wood with increasingly finer grit, ending up with 220 grade. Dust THOROUGHLY and then stain according to the product's directions. Top the stain off with either wax or varnish.
