What they be is based on a discontinued Eminence bass guitar speaker. Well, the model number exists, but it's a different animal now. Sorry, as these were promising, but witha complicated x-o in order to rectify driver peaks. Crossing over to a 1" horn driver (also discontinued) about 4K, which gets above the most of the vocal range. IME a speaker with no x-o points between 300-4000 will be coherent, which is what single drivers do Hope that makes sense. What I will say, is that a stock Em PSD2002 1" driver into an Em horn and a Delta series 15" Em woofer in a Karlson enclosure did really well at a Bottlehead meeting some years ago. the thought behind my madness was to find a cheap thrift store pair of speakers for $20, of reasonable size, and build from there.
I second ALNICO, the GP 604 is ceramic though. Need to say that vintage ALNICO drivers need to have the magnet "recharged" which GP does. I've been very disappointed by high efficiency single drivers, I've had Lowther and Fostex. Mids are peaky no matter what you try. Some folks aren't bothered by this, and I am not flaming them in any way, shape or form. I personally can't stand that particular sound as it makes every recording sound the same. I have heard good single driver speakers, just nothing that plays over 90 db/1w/1m. I'll look up the speakers you mentioned. Google up PIONET, an interesting clone of a Pi design.
