Over the weekend I did some more “finishing” to my S.E.X. amp. I attached the top plate with some nice SS socket-head screws and fitted a vented piece on the bottom; both to make the amp ‘novice-proof’ at work. I also polished the power transformer and painted the output transformers' outer shell a nice flat black. It is now a very nice looking amp as well as a very functional amp.
To get to the point, after re-assembly I lined it up in the system with the new Straight 8s just to make sure I hadn’t pulled something loose. I put in a CD that I just got and hadn’t listened to yet; Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley.
Folks, I have been seriously back into hi-fi for about three years now, and have listened to various hi-end systems. I have never been overwhelmed with emotion like I was for practically the entire CD. I kept looking at the gear; yep, my little stock S.E.X. amp and homemade Straight 8s with those cheap drivers is making the hair on my arm stand up and putting the lump in my throat.
I am sure my emotion was partially because I was reading about Eva while listening. I had not heard of her until recently. It is shame that we lost her so prematurely. This lady could perform, and what a glorious voice! Her music is what makes these tiny little SETs sound their best and I could listen to it over and over.
What are some of your emotional listening experiences?
