One of the benefits of the FP III is that it has a beefed up power supply. It can also be turned into a dual mono power supply, since it has two B+ windings.

If you use a smaller Hammond Xfmr, regardless of the center tap, you will lose a big benefit of the FP III. You will make it a FP 2.
