Yes, there are also tape heads made out of "magneto-resistive" (MR) materials which change resistance depending on the strength of magnetic fields, used in HDDs. The only audio application I know of this was in the Philips Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) recorders of the early 80s. MR heads were used to read both the digital and analogue tapes. It would be interesting if such a head were available for 1/4" tape. Apparently they are much less sensitive to azimuth errors.
