A follow up: the playback equalization achieves two things, 1. correction of the 6dB/octave gain because of the "derivative" matter discussed, 2. other losses introduced by the head, etc. I suppose except for (2), the Hilbert transform would be perfect -- except in the lower frequencies because of very long delay needs perhaps -- but the corrections in (2) are not reciprocated in the record chain -- they happen, at least partly, for mechanical reasons. Do those introduce additional phase errors of their own?
