I was afraid to leave it on more than a minute or two. No smoke, but I could smell the heat.

I think I've found the problem. I inadvertently swapped the 350 and 340 transistors on the "A" board. I've managed to remove them but had to cut the very ends off the leads to get them out. I've cleaned out the holes and now need to try to get them remounted in the right positions. I'll do it in the morning when I'm a bit fresher.
