Yeah...

Shortcuts are bad.

I'm thinking now that the original problem was in this part of the amp. When I first discovered the problem, I was using fast-blow fuses, and they were dying right away. After reading Doc B's posts about the switch to slow-blows, that's what I bought this time. It seems to me that the fuse lasted long enough to allow the short to fully develop, leading to nasty flashing and smoky discharge.

Note to self, and all others: "Fire it up, let it burn, replace what burned" is NOT a valid troubleshooting technique!!
