Oops, that was me posting under CB's moniker again. Briefly the recipe I use is a piece of white masonite, rolled with flat white paint, then rolled with a very thin coat of pearlescent paint, and then rolled with water base matte varnish. It has good gain without any hotspot, and great color. I use very simple black velvet covered adjustable masks around the edges to handle all the different formats. The side masks are curtains on short rods, with a fishing weight attached at the inside bottom corner to keep the edge of the curtain taught and vertical. The top and bottom masks are velvet covered foam panels about 12" tall. They are suspended at each end by a rope that connects the top and bottom panels together and loops over a pulley at the ceiling so that when the top panel is moved up the bottom panel goes down the same amount. Manually adjusted and stupid simple, and it's surprising what a really crisp black mask around the image does to make the experience more theater-like, particularly on a 2.35:1 widescreen movie with graybars top and bottom.
