I've not heard the units you mention, but I own a VTL 2.5 preamp which now lists for $1900, so it'd be a step up from the level you mention. The VTL was my benchmark when I built my Foreplay 2 years ago. To my ears, the two are comparable: the VTL is more detailed, but the stock Foreplay has better tonality and, as a result, is more musical (at least to me). I wouldn't call one better than the other, just different, but I ended up preferring the Bottlehead.

Once I upgraded my Foreplay with the Extended mod, there was no contest: the Extended Foreplay clearly sounds better. But to be fair to the VTL, it's quieter and feels more "solid." It also has a remote.

But based just on sonics, the Extended Foreplay has better controlled and more detailed bass, a wider and deeper soundstage, and a cleaner high end.
