Long live the Alligator

This is not the speaker we will use at VSAC. It's a crude prototype built to see if we like the drivers we chose. We like. We actually listened to the drivers all day long as we tweaked - a certain recipe for listening fatigue - and got them sounding good enough that we could listen to them for for pure enjoyment in the evening for several hours in spite of the day long critical listening session. Not many speakers that I can say that about.

The ATD woofers are very nice if you take care to cut them off hard to eliminate the typical 5" woofer a 6kHz resonance. Once it's knocked down it is pretty much a non-issue. The bass in quite impressive. Eight of them in each channel should be pretty amazing.

The RAAL tweeter is quite nice too. The suggested crossover on their data sheet seems to work pretty well, but we still found (and measured) some of the typical ribbon tweeter resonance that can give ribbons an edgy quality in the lower to mid treble. That's where the alligator teeth come in. The felt diffraction filter was the final touch necessary to just about completely eliminate the slight "bite" in vocals and strings.

Obviously this project is not cheap, and the eight driver version will be quite spendy to build, with about $3700 in the drivers alone (and of course about $10K in amp kits). But I do feel like we are coming up with something that is of a quality level that shows the true potential of Bottlehead electronics.

Before you ask - this is our baby, and I am not inclined to share design details. We have a few other designs on the website and I will steer you to those for DIY.
