OT - impedance matching

I need help understanding/visualizing this concept.

I have the following test equipment:

3 function generators - 600ohm output, 50 ohm output and an old EICO 377 whose output is currently unknown to me.

2 frequency counters - each with 50 ohm input

Tek 465 scope with 1 megohm input

AC VTVM with 600 ohm input.

The first question is, Do I have to worry about matching impedances when using these?

If so, how do I do that?

I ask because my frequency counters do not give the right answer for the lower frequencies (under 2k) when hooked up to the EICO generator. But if I hook up the EICO to the oscilloscope I can see the EICO is putting out just fine.

Please help, I need perspecitve!!! Links are appreciated.
