I certainly would not want to be without my digital multimeter. They're very useful tools, especially for measuring static values.

That said, I also agree that a swinging needle display gives you some information that a bouncing string of digits never will.

I remember having this discussion with Larry Scully many years ago at an AES show. The old Scully lathe had the most gorgeous swinging needle ever made, to show the varying pitch. Larry had made a new lathe ("The Lathe" was the model designation) that was the ultimate expression of his company's efforts. But it had a digital readout. The eye can integrate a lot of information about trends from watching a swinging needle. Dancing digits are a huge amount of information from which we can extract very little meaning.
