Get a pack of clipleads - wires about a foot long with alligator clips at each end. Cost a couple bucks at Radio Shack or similar places. They are very useful! You can clip them to the meter probes.

You will want a high voltage scale, 1000 volts maximum. You will want low voltage and current scales, typically 200mV and 200uA (microamps) full scale.

If you have the money to spend, look for a meter with flat AC response to 20kHz or more. These are not easy to find; often they have "true-rms" capability as well which is somewhat useful - but not as much as the good high frequency response. Such a meter will be more expensive however - I suggest an inexpensive meter to start with. If you eventually need an expensive one too, a second meter is often quite handy to have.
