Doing a session thing with unregistered users isn't exactly trivial. A large number that are that concerned to not want to register don't accept cookies either, so making anything robust is another problem. Honestly, we're one of the very few forums that don't require registration and look at this one, probably 98% of the posters registered.

Well, no one gets spam because of us. Our emailer completely hides user's emails from anyone and gets them the option to not recieve any email if they wish. It's only an issue for the paranoid. Though I agree, most sites spam you like crazy. I've got a few throwaway email addies for those type of registrations.
