Apple Lossless is a closed, proprietary format. You are locked into whatever hardware and software that Apple sells a license to. If you are planning on keeping you music longer than a year or two, a closed format is not a very good choice.
Look into FLAC. Open, lossless & enjoying a large support base. Check out the link for some info on FLAC support. Compared to AL's support base, I'd say FLAC's future is a lot brighter.
Remember: "Friends don't let friends use closed formats".
